Public Health Solutions District Health Department is pleased to announce the Department of Health and Human Resources/Health Resources and Services Administration has awarded the District $100,000 dollars to fund the Rural Access to Emergency Devices (RAED) program.  The purpose of the RAED program is to reduce the death rate from heart attacks in rural areas by increasing the number of people who recognize the warning signs and know what to do in the event.  Automated external defibrillators (AED’s) will be placed where people congregate and with emergency responders throughout the District.

According to a 2004 Nebraska DHHS report, rural victims of heart attacks are more likely to die than those in urban areas due to the distances involved in response.  Volunteer emergency medical responders and law enforcement are the backbone of rural emergency response.  The RAED program will help them in their emergency response efforts.

  • Approximately 80-90 people will be trained in CPR, proper use of AED devices, and the importance of bystander intervention during cardiac events.
  • Approximately 20-25 AED devices will be placed across the District.

Public Health Solutions will be collaborating with County Emergency Management, EMS units, Law Enforcement, Cornhusker Chapter of the Red Cross, health care providers, elected officials, and citizens.  This collaborative program will proceed with identifying current AED locations across the District in an effort to highlight gaps, and initiate training efforts.  If you know that an AED is present in your community please contact the Department at 888-310-0565.  For more information about this program please visit www.phsneb.org or call Sharon Clouse, BS,RN, RAED Project Coordinator at 826-3880.
