RRP is EPA's rule requiring training/certification for contractors doing work on most residential and some commercial properties built before 1978. Workers must also follow certain work practices that reduce the risk of dangerous childhood lead exposure. Child lead exposure has been common during and after renovations/ repairs that disturb lead-based paint.
- "Work" refers to any activity that disturbs painted surfaces, including window repair/replacement.
- Other training and certifications relating to lead work do not entirely substitute for this new requirement, though you may be able to take a shorter refresher course rather than the full 8-hour initial course.
Enforcement of the training/certification portion of this rule has been delayed (September 30, 2010 for certification, December 31, 2010 for training), but workers can still be fined if they are found to be violating work practices on a pre-1978 job site where children live or visit.
