The "Priority Issues List" below is based on previous assessment efforts and community input, and current discussions made by the Jefferson County BASIS workgroup.

Public awareness Increase community's understanding of how personal health is impacted by enviromental health

1. Education/Outreach that is specific to how human/family health are affected by lack of prioritizing environmental health in decision-making

2. Identify cost-savings scenarios regarding environmental health prioritization

Children's Health Improve children's health data for Jefferson County by 2010

1. Provide 'environmental education' packets to new parents

2. Provide 'environmental assessment toolkits' to medical providers and staff

Waste Management (trash/waste, recycling, dumping)

1. Decrease the number of illegal dump cleanups annually

2. Increase the number of recycling trailers, and the availability of different recyclables

3. Increase/improve refuse services countywide

1. Use Crimestopper line for illegal dumping along with reward with conviction

2. Use community service hours for cleanup of illegal dump sites

3. Partner with refuse businesses to map and ID services countywide

4. Provide grantwriting facilitation services to communities looking for related funding

Pharmaceutical disposal Reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals entering waste and wastewater stream

1. Hold an annual pharmaceutical collection event

- work with Sheriff's office, hospital, and county commissioners

- ID potential funding sources and additional partners

Dilapidated Buildings

1. Decrease the number of dilapidated/abandoned properties in Jefferson County

2. Increase the amount of Federal and State funds for property rehab or demolition in Jefferson County

1. Market rehab programs via BVCA, SENDD, USDA, NE Housing Trust to target populations

2. Write more grant applications
