BASIS of Community Environmental Health - Saline County

An Environmental Health Tour was taken summer 2008 with the Saline County core workgroup members. Sites visited include a feedlot and a preserved prairiegrass area.

The workgroup identified priority environmental health issues and strategies for addressing them.

Saline County Priority EH Issues
Goals
Strategies
Waste Management (trash/waste, recycling, dumping)

1. Reduce the amount of waste going to landfills

2. Increase the number of recycling drop sites and variety of recyclables accepted

1. Conduct a public awareness campaign, including landfill study results, environmentally conscious purchasing habits, buy local, community composting, and recycling availability

2. Reinstitute recycling sites for all 8 communities, including a plan to prevent abuses

3. Assist communities in grantwriting and partnership development with refuse companies (countywide approach vs. individual communities)

4. Conduct a cost analysis of mandatory recycling/refuse for the 8 communities (including cost of cleanup fees for illegal dumping that results from inadequate refuse service)

Water Quality/Quantity Increase public awareness and understanding of the county's water resource

1. Create a water resource guide that outlines "who's who" in water regulation, protection, use, etc. etc.

2. Organize a group of volunteers to survey, cleanup, and monitor Saline County waterbodies

Exposure to toxins Reduce the number of communities that spray pesticide to control adult mosquito populations Complete a cost analysis and action plan for village/city board review, comparing larvacide and habitat control programs vs. adulticide 'fogging' programs
Air Quality

1. Reduce auto emissions

2. Increase walking/biking trails

3. Increase public awareness of traffic patterns, driving alternatives

1. Establish a commuter website or message board format that allows people to link and build carpool groups

2. Explore other ways stimulus funds can be used to build up walking/biking infrastructure (Highway 33 bridge replacement funds may be flexible to include other items)

3. Investigate zoning actions that can be put in place to require businesses to support safer paths/trails

Dilapidated Properties

1. Highlight the difficulty rural communities are having with dilapidated properties to the State Executive & Legislative branches, County Commissioners, County Attorney’s, County Judges.

2. Establish more incentive programs to foster owner responsibility.

3. Submit grant applications to NDEQ’s ‘Deconstruction program’January 2010 .

4. Participate in a District wide group focused on this issue.

1. Survey the 8 village/city clerks, and boards

2. Research best practices

3. Create incentives program

Greenspace Availability Identify communities that are lacking in neighborhood green space/parks Survey and map the 8 communities
