Public Health Disparities
Public health problems such as access to affordable health care and incidence of disease and illness are experienced more frequently and severely by some more than others. Racial minorities, economically disadvantaged, those who are physically, linguistically and/or culturally isolated, the self-employed - these groups may be less likely to seek care or have access to it, and may be more likely to suffer from certain illnesses than the average Nebraskan. Public Health Solutions is working to identify public health disparities in our district and work with communities to reduce them and improve overall public health. PHS has also developed health education sessions specifically aimed at increasing awareness and adoption of healthy choices among the area's growing Hispanic population (Salud Para Su Corazon and Living Well programs), and a network of "promotoras" or lay health educators to help in this effort.
County-by-County Behavioral Risk Factor Survey - Residents of Hispanic descent make up a rapidly growing percentage of Saline County's population, so this population was disproporationately surveyed in the 2008 Saline County BRFSS project. Similar care will be taken with each county's special demographic concerns as the surveys are completed one county per year.
