Recharge Recycling

           

The handful of recycling locations for rechargeable batteries in the PHS district are underused and do not accept the disposable batteries that most people use in their small electronics and household items. As part of our service as your local health department, Public Health Solutions applied for and received grant funding from the Department of Environmental Quality in 2006 to spearhead an exciting battery recycling project in your community.

Why is this project important?

Alkaline batteries (A, B, C and D-series) and other ‘one-time use’ types often contain harmful components that are not entirely used up before disposal. Though individually they are not considered hazardous waste, the quantities that are used and discarded – around 24,000 pounds each year in the PHS district alone – are a significant cause for concern. It is also a waste of money and valuable resources!

Though “Recharge Recycling” has officially ended, recycling containers are still available at the following locations to collect all types of household batteries until supplies are exhausted:

Rechargeable batteries contain extremely toxic chemical residues that are particularly hazardous to the environment - they were designed to be recycled, not discarded. The following locations always accept rechargeable batteries for recycling:
