Charge to Recycle!
In 2008 PHS again acquired NDEQ funds to help the residents of our five-county area recycle their household batteries. As with our previous battery recycling project, we also hope to use this opportunity to encourage residents to ditch the disposable battery habit, and switch over to using more eco-friendly rechargeable batteries.
Household battery recycling may still be available at (only while supplies last):
- Fillmore County Extension (Geneva)
- Village of Exeter (library)
- Public Health Solutions District Health Department (Crete)
- Village of Shickley (village office)
- Doane College, Student Leadership Office, Perry Campus Center (Crete)
- J&L Electronics - Radio Shack (Beatrice)
Saline County Extension Office (Wilber)
- Southeast Community College, Beatrice (Kennedy Building, Ford Hall, Ag Center)
- The Village of Odell (bank, post office)
- Thayer County Extension Office (Hebron)
- Choice Communications - Radio Shack (Fairbury)
Hebron True Value (no more containers)
- Jefferson Community Health Center (lobby)
- Village of Davenport, Fire Hall
When these sites close, there is one in Lincoln that takes household batteries, and several sites that take button batteries.
A quick note about Rechargeable Batteries. They cost less over their lifetime, use less energy and raw materials than disposables, and they are now more reliable than ever. We encourage everyone to give them a try. Even after this program ends, used up rechargeable batteries can and should always be recycled. Wal-Mart and Radio Shack sponsor permanent recycling programs at all of their store locations. No Wal-Mart or Radio Shack nearby? Any organization can request a free postage-paid collection box from The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (www.rbrc.com) for rechargeable batteries only!
