State Smoking Ban
On February 26, 2008 Governor Heineman signed into law Nebraska's statewide smoking ban. Legislative Bill (LB) 395 extends the Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act to prohibit smoking in all workplaces except tobacco shops, hotels (up to 20% of rooms), locations where smoking research is being done, and private residences that are not used for licensed child care programs. This means that lawmakers, law enforcement officials, state and local public health agencies, and business owners across the state are now readying themselves for implementation of the ban, which is set to take effect no later than June 2009. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is charged with drawing up Rules and Regulations, getting information out to the public and businesses, and providing input to law enforcement on how to enforce the ban. There will be a Public Hearing in June to discuss the development of information resources.
